Gayelle Presentation Reflection

Hello Everyone!

I can vividly recall my very first impression when we had this group project for the first time. It was, Praise the Lord, the presentation will aid us in improving our presentation skills. I had thought that presenting in my house would be the easiest, considering I had no one in front of me, just me, my slides, and the laughter that I had prepared. Even in my own room, I was not prepared for the nerves. I was shaking, my hands were sweating, and it was just one of those events that I constantly worrying about messing up. Surprisingly, I have to say that the class was equally informative and I pondered over the ideas simply by listening to my peers almost as much as by presenting my own. It was quite an experience, every group had something to offer and collaborating as one helped tremendously.

Team 1 : The Pillars of Public Speaking

The Introduction of the Book (chapters 1,2, 3 and 5) were the blanket foundations of public speaking and I would say the team was very efficient. They were able to teach us the general purpose of any speech which could be to inform, persuade or entertain. This portion was very enlightening for the rest of us. It was amazing to see what one person could do just by knowing the purpose of their presentation. I would say the examples that someone uses, tone of delivery and the connection with the audience would be just the icing on the cake. They also voiced concern about managing anxiety, which was beneficial because many of us have anxiety. One thing that stuck with me was the fact that nervousness does not erase preparation. Also, the advice on active listening was memorable. Public speaking is not only about talking. It also involves how the message is conveyed and received.

Group 1’s presentation served as a reminder that the fundamentals can never be skipped. Everything that was said was clear, but without a clear purpose and reasoning to the audience, the rest of the speech would not be seamless.

Group 2: My Group (Chapters 4, 6, 7, and 8)

My group, along with myself, spent time on Chapters 4, 6, 7 and 8 and the collaboration was so terrific. Jephthe and I worked on Chapter 4. I worked on Determining your purpose and brainstorming topics, and it was fascinating to dissect how a speech starts. “Determining Your General Purpose’ with outlining will be the first step. Your first step is to decide whether you are trying to: Inform, Persuade or a Special Occasion. I reminded everyone that focusing on one clear goal is crucial. A story, joke, or example should always help and never detract from the goal.

Then I moved onto brainstorming. Brainstorming is an exercise with the goal to bring as many ideas as possible in a set amount without being judgmental, it is also a tip that aids in exercising one’s imagination. A few things I told them were to consider the things that you know or that you are interested in and to also listen to and observe the discussions that are part of your daily life, the news, and social media.

In chapters 6, 7 and 8 the focus was on researching, idea development and speech organization. My teammates  discussed the proper way of collecting sources, the use of testimonials or interviews, plagiarism, outlining, and proper speech flow. Although everyone was nervous, we had a functioning group. Our slides were organized, and our thoughts flowed logically from one to another in such a way that really made the group effort worthwhile, as everyone contributed in some way. The experience proved that teamwork leads to easier presentations, and leadership is not just about telling people what they must do; it is here where they support and co-guide people into a harmonious final product.

Group 3: Speech Crafting

Group 3 were tasked with Chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12. The Group centered on how to make the speech engaging, from intangibles to conclusions. Some of the areas I learned a lot about were:

Credibility: Dressing better or giving credible examples on account of small things builds up one's credibility.

Language: Using inclusive, clear, and creative language fortifies a speech.

Visual Aids: They encouraged using slides as aids rather than crutches, with more pictures than words to keep the audience interested.

Delivery has proper posture, eye contact, and voice projection. They also discussed the importance of balancing preparation because:

Being over-prepared can cause overthinking while under-preparing can make you shaky.

What I liked most is that they really linked these tips to the audience experience, showing that how you present can be just as important as what you present.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on all four groups, I can see how every piece fits together:

  • Group 1 taught us the basics and foundations, from purpose to audience analysis.

  •  My group, Group 2, focused on developing topics, researching, supporting ideas, and structuring speeches.

  • Group 3 showed the importance of delivery, language, and visual aids.

  • Group 4 highlighted types of speeches, argument structure, and connecting with the audience.

The biggest takeaway for me was in understanding the fact that good public speaking not only requires knowing your topic but preparation, practice, and connection with your audience. My confidence was fueled by just being part of this whole structure, and I feel equipped now to face new presentations. I also got to understand that nerves are not the definitions of failure; they just come as part of the program, and working on your presentation really does pay off.

After reviewing all the presentation, these class presentations weren’t just a random assortment of presentations, they were a hands-on lesson in public speaking, team work, and how to grow and strengthen our skills. I walked away from class knowing how to pick a topic effectively, support it with credible research, organize it effectively and deliver it confidently. Watching all the groups go and reflecting on my own contribution has set me up to be a stronger presenter not only in my classrooms but beyond.
